About This Project

Origin

The project was born in France in 2014, when a group of large companies began working together on the environmental footprint of digital technology (Green IT). In 2018, that work formalised into the Institut du Numérique Responsable (INR), a non-profit association. The network then grew across borders: ISIT Belgium was founded in 2020, and ISIT Switzerland in 2021 — both modelled on the French association and working in partnership with it.

Today the network is composed of three independent non-profit organisations in Belgium, France and Switzerland, together bringing together more than 290 member organisations: large companies, SMEs, local authorities, schools, universities and NGOs.

Mission

The aim of ISIT Europe is to help organisations succeed their digital transition while reducing the environmental and social footprint of their IT services and usages. The approach rests on the 3P principle — the three pillars of Sustainable IT:

  • People — inclusive, accessible, ethical digital services
  • Planet — reduced environmental footprint of digital technology
  • Prosperity — fair sharing of the value digital technology creates

This website

isit-europe.org is itself built to embody the network's own principles — a lightweight, transparent, open-source site rather than a heavyweight CMS:

  • Static HTML — no CMS, no build step, no server-side runtime.
  • Minimal, external JavaScript — no framework; the only scripts are the cookieless analytics loader and the internal monitoring dashboard, both same-origin files.
  • Self-hosted fonts — no request to Google Fonts, for GDPR compliance and fewer third parties.
  • Cookieless analytics — a self-hosted Matomo instance running in disableCookies mode; no cookie of any kind is set.
  • Accessibility target: WCAG 2.1 AA — see the accessibility statement for current conformance status.
  • Hardened security headers — strict Content-Security-Policy, HSTS, no framing, cross-origin isolation.
  • Five languages — English, French, German, Italian and Spanish, each with full hreflang cross-referencing.

The source code is open on GitHub. Contributions are welcome via pull request — see CONTRIBUTING.md for the workflow and the Developer Certificate of Origin. A self-hosted monitoring dashboard tracks the site's own SEO and eco-design hygiene in the open.
